Pixie captured this shot while I am at the relative position where some of the VMI Cadets were killed or wounded.
The Union artillery and first assault had a devastating effect on Confederate defensive positions on the Bushong farm!
VMI cadets, held in reserve, were ordered into the line in the Rebel center at the orchard beside the farm. With the Union 34th Massachusetts at their front the Cadets were in rifle range of Union attackers.
The Cadets climbed the fence at the orchard and charged the Union lines. This is the charge immortalized as the "Field of Lost Shoes" because as the Cadets ran through the muck, suction pulled their footwear off and they continued on - barefooted!
